đź“ťThe Prince Wootton Edition Book Synopsis : "This is an excellent, readable and vigorous translation of The Prince, but it is much more than simply a translation. The map, notes and guide to further reading are crisp, to-the-point and yet nicely comprehensive. The inclusion of the letter to Vettori is most welcome. But, above all, the Introduction is so gripping and lively that it has convinced me to include The Prince in my syllabus for History of Western Civilization the next time that I teach it. . . . Great price, too! And lovely printing and layout." --Rachel Fulton, University of Chicago

đź“ťThe Prince Book Synopsis : The Prince is the most controversial book about winning power - and holding on to it - ever written. Machiavelli's tough-minded, pragmatic argument that sometimes it is necessary to abandon ethics to succeed made his name notorious. Yet his book has been read by strategists, politicians and business people ever since as the ultimate guide to realpolitik. How can a leader be strong and decisive, yet still inspire loyalty in his followers? How do you keep your enemies in check? Is it better to be feared than loved? When is it necessary to break the rules? This shrewd handbook on how power really works answers all these questions by examining regimes and their rulers around the world and throughout history, from Roman emperors to renaissance Popes, from the savagely cruel Hannibal to the utterly devious Cesare di Borgia. Tim Parks's gripping contemporary translation delivers Machiavelli's no-nonsense original straight, making it as alarming and enlightening as when it was first written.

đź“ťThe prince of darkness Book Synopsis : The Prince of Darkness', written by Erika Mitterer (1906-2001) in 1939, is a veiled criticism of the contemporary political system. It was meant to show how evil can rise and take hold of people who are not intrinsically bad but let themselves be carried away by indifference. The novel offers an extraordinary panoramic tapestry of early-sixteenth century life in pre-Reformation Germany. It was the time of decline for the nobility, of peasant revolts, of the rise of mercantile capitalism, of free-thinking scholars, artists and scientists and of the Inquisition. Theresa, one of the two protagonists, is suspected of sorcery because of simple acts of everyday kindness and is eventually burned at the stake as a witch. Her sister, Maria Michaela, who had entered the convent and became tots prioress, let herself be manipulated by her father confessor. Readers experience and come to understand how the winds of mass hysteria and frustration can sway a solid citizenry to vicious gossip and acts of madness, of revenge by denunciation, of denunciation for reward, splitting lovers and families, as the one intellectual in the novel stand by helplessly. So striking was this element of the book it its implicit association with the Hitler regime that, after its publication in Norway, a sudden absence of paper prevented it from being republished in Germany.

đź“ťPrince of Pleasure Book Synopsis : The Prince of Pleasure is the immaculately researched and engaging story of George IV (1762-1830), a rakish and contradictory figure who became one of the most controversial and outrageous monarchs in British history. Critically acclaimed biographer Saul David has captured the passions and foibles of this monarch -- infamous for being overweight, overdressed, and oversexed -- who epitomized England's regency period. George IV was marked throughout his life by financial ruin and domestic entanglements. Though known primarily for his scandalous lifestyle, he was also a man of high intelligence with a great appreciation for art and literature. In addition to encouraging the works of both Jane Austen and Sir Walter Scott, as well as purchasing the Elgin Marbles, he promoted England's Regency style of architecture. In fast-moving and incisive prose, Saul David paints a brilliantly detailed portrait of the Regency period.
