📒Long Road To Hard Truth ✍ Robert Wilkins
📝Long Road to Hard Truth Book Synopsis : In Long Road to Hard Truth: The 100 Year Mission to Create the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Robert L. Wilkins tells the story of how his curiosity about why there wasn't a national museum dedicated to African American history and culture became an obsession-eventually leading him to quit his job as an attorney when his wife was seven months pregnant with their second child, and make it his mission to help the museum become a reality. Long Road to Hard Truth chronicles the early history, when staunch advocates sought to create a monument for Black soldiers fifty years after the end of the Civil War and in response to the pervasive indignities of the time, including lynching, Jim Crow segregation, and the slander of the racist film Birth of a Nation. The movement soon evolved to envision creating a national museum, and Wilkins follows the endless obstacles through the decades, culminating in his honor of becoming a member of the Presidential Commission that wrote the plan for creating the museum and how, with support of both Black and White Democrats and Republicans, Congress finally authorized the museum. In September 2016, exactly 100 years after the movement to create it began, the Smithsonian will open the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The book's title is inspired in part by James Baldwin, who testified in Congress in 1968 that "My history... contains the truth about America. It is going to be hard to teach it." Long Road to Hard Truth concludes that this journey took 100 years because many in America are unwilling to confront the history of America's legacy of slavery and discrimination, and that the only reason this museum finally became a reality is that an unlikely, bipartisan coalition of political leaders had the courage and wisdom to declare that America could not, and should not, continue to evade the hard truth.
📒Slayers And Vampires ✍ Edward Gross
📝Slayers and Vampires Book Synopsis : In 1997 the first episode of a new show called Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired. And its creator Joss Whedon's subversive take on supernatural stories has shaped everything from Marvel to Star Wars. Twenty years on, the story of the girl who saved the universe . . . a lot and the world's most emotionally complicated vampire is told in Slayers and Vampires by the people who were there. 📒Battling For Manassas ✍ Joan M. Zenzen
📝Battling for Manassas Book Synopsis : When the Disney Company ended months of controversy in 1995 by deciding against locating its historic theme park near the National Battlefield Park in Manassas, Virginia, advocates of historic preservation had won their own battle but perhaps not their war. Few places exemplify the problems of historic preservation as urgently as Manassas. The site of this Civil War battle, also known as Bull Run, has been encroached upon by plans for an interstate highway, a cemetery, a shopping mall, and two theme parks. As Washington continues its sprawl into the Virginia countryside, pressure will surely mount to develop the remaining open land surrounding the battlefield. The history of Manassas battlefield illustrates that the Disney controversy is only the latest in a long line of skirmishes over historic preservation and use. Battling for Manassas is a record of the struggles to preserve the park over the past fifty years. First commissioned as a report by the National Park Service, this book tells how park managers, government officials, preservationists, developers, and concerned citizens have managed to find compromises that would protect the site while accommodating changes in the surrounding community. Joan Zenzen's narrative places these highly publicized preservation conflicts within the framework of the park's history. She traces the efforts to preserve this Civil War battleground as it has slowly been surrounded by suburban development and discloses how issues involving visitors' facilities, recreation use of parkland, non-park-related usage, and encroachment on park boundaries by commercial interests have all come into play. Her study draws on interviews with many individuals who have been influential in the park's history&—including park service officials, members of Congress, representatives of preservation groups, developers, and local officials&—as well as on archival documents that help explain the nature of each controversy. She also shows that the Park Service's reluctance to conduct long-range planning following the controversy over Marriott's proposed Great America theme park contributed to later battles over development. Battling for Manassas is the story of how one site has garnered national attention and taught Americans valuable lessons about the future of historic preservation. It demonstrates to everyone interested in the Civil War that, with only 58 of 384 sites currently under Park Service jurisdiction, what has happened at Manassas might well occur on other historic grounds threatened by development or neglect.

📒Soaring Higher ✍ Philip C. Eyster
📝Soaring Higher Book Synopsis : This is a book that will take you soaring - with information and inspiration. But first it will bring you down to earth. When I read the first chapter I thought, "I'm glad I wasn't part of Phil's team" - with the snakes, the disposals, the often terrible food. It's not about glamorous travels. Then when I read chapter two I thought, "I wish I could have been there" - to see God at work. Here is the moving, real, down to earth story of how God led one man to make a difference - not with glamor, but with grit and grace, and not for a year or two but a lifetime of faithful ministry. I wish every young evangelist could read it. Leighton Ford, President Leighton Ford Ministries. Charlotte, North Carolina. Every man or woman who answers God's call to ministry comes to the altar with some idea of where they would like to serve, whether it is a glistening cathedral, a humble country church, or somewhere in the mission field. Raised on the teachings of men such as J. Hudson Taylor and C.S. Spurgeon, Dr. Philip C. Eyster, believed his calling was to be an evangelist but he didn't know how or where God would lead him. Eventually, God led him all over the world wherever there was need for the light of the Gospel. Through preaching, teaching, physical labor, and medical clinics Dr. and his organization have been demonstrating God's love and healing power wherever there was need and a little space to meet the need. Over the years they have criss-crossed continents, planting churches, building orphanages, providing eyeglasses, and giving sanctuary for those shunned by society or victimized by poverty and perversity. These reflections collected over 50 years show the reality of field ministry: the humor, the tears, the dangers, and the miracles.
📒The Fifty Year Rebellion ✍ Scott Kurashige
📝The Fifty Year Rebellion Book Synopsis : This title is part of American Studies Now and available as an e-book first. Visit ucpress.edu/go/americanstudiesnow to learn more. On July 23rd, 1967, the eyes of the world fixed on Detroit, as thousands took to the streets to vent their frustrations with white racism, police brutality, and vanishing job prospects in the place that gave rise to the American Dream. For mainstream observers, the “riot” brought about the ruin of a once great city, and the municipal bankruptcy of 2013 served as a bailout paving the way for Detroit to be rebuilt. Challenging this prevailing view, Scott Kurashige portrays the past half-century as a long “rebellion” whose underlying tensions continue to haunt the city and the U.S. nation-state. Michigan’s scandal-ridden emergency management regime comprises the most concerted effort to put it down by disenfranchising the majority black citizenry and neutralizing the power of unions. Are we succumbing to authoritarian plutocracy or can we create a new society rooted in social justice and participatory democracy? The corporate architects of Detroit’s restructuring have championed the creation of a “business-friendly” city where billionaire developers are subsidized to privatize and gentrify Downtown while working-class residents are squeezed out by rampant housing evictions, school closures, water shutoffs, toxic pollution, and militarized policing. From the grassroots, however, Detroit has emerged as an international model for survival, resistance, and solidarity through the creation of urban farms, freedom schools, and self-governing communities. This epoch struggle illuminates the possible futures for our increasingly unstable and polarized nation.
