📝Advances in Motor Learning and Control Book Synopsis : Advances in Motor Learning and Controlsurveys the latest, most important advances in the field, surpassing the confines of debate between proponents of the information processing and dynamical systems. Zelaznik, editor of the Journal of Motor Behaviorfrom 1989 to 1996, brings together a variety of perspectives. Some of the more difficult topics-such as behavioral analysis of trajectory formation and the dynamic pattern perspective of rhythmic movement-are presented in tutorial fashion. Other chapters provide a foundation for understanding increasingly specialized areas of study.

📝Error Prediction Specificity Book Synopsis : The present study examined whether increasing the specificity of error prediction would influence motor performance and learning. The study examined (n=24) participants divided into 3 three training conditions (n=8 per group), while performing a ball-tossing task. Each group differed on the extent to which they had to provide a prediction of tossing accuracy following each throw. A control group offered no prediction of toss performance, whereas a general prediction group provided a categorical prediction of performance outcome. Finally, a specific prediction group provided an exact location prediction following each toss. Results revealed no differences in overall tossing performance between the 3 groups, but did display an increased rate of learning and prediction accuracy for the specific training group. Interestingly, findings revealed that requiring participants to provide specific predictions of performance may negatively impact performance potentially due to pressure attributed to self-focused attention, ego-relevance, or self-awareness. These findings indicate that providing a specific prediction of performance error may be detrimental to performance during learning.

📝Routledge Handbook of Motor Control and Motor Learning Book Synopsis : The Routledge Handbook of Motor Control and Motor Learning is the first book to offer a comprehensive survey of neurophysiological, behavioural and biomechanical aspects of motor function. Adopting an integrative approach, it examines the full range of key topics in contemporary human movement studies, explaining motor behaviour in depth from the molecular level to behavioural consequences. The book contains contributions from many of the world ́s leading experts in motor control and motor learning, and is composed of five thematic parts: Theories and models Basic aspects of motor control and learning Motor control and learning in locomotion and posture Motor control and learning in voluntary actions Challenges in motor control and learning Mastering and improving motor control may be important in sports, but it becomes even more relevant in rehabilitation and clinical settings, where the prime aim is to regain motor function. Therefore the book addresses not only basic and theoretical aspects of motor control and learning but also applied areas like robotics, modelling and complex human movements. This book is both a definitive subject guide and an important contribution to the contemporary research agenda. It is therefore important reading for students, scholars and researchers working in sports and exercise science, kinesiology, physical therapy, medicine and neuroscience.

📝Acquisition and Performance of Sports Skills Book Synopsis : Acquisition and Performance of Sports Skills provides students with the theoretical and practical background that is necessary for an understanding of the basics of skill acquisition and performance. This understanding is founded on the student's existing knowledge of sport and leads into the subject, using a student centred, problem-solving approach. The first half of the book examines the nature of sports performance and the second skill acquisition. There is a debate among researchers into psychomotor learning: the ecological versus the cognitive approach. Because this book is aimed clearly at students taking a first course in the subject the author includes examples from both schools of thought thus ensuring a balanced approach. looks at skill acquisition firmly within the context of sports performance takes students' practical experience as a starting point then clearly explains the underlying theories presents both cognitive and ecological approaches to the subject to give a balanced view excellent pedagogy including problem-solving tasks, practical experiments and revision notes at the end of chapters Written by an author with many years teaching, research and practical coaching experience, Acquisition and Performance of Sport Skills proves invaluable for students of sport and exercise science taking a first course in skill acquisition, motor learning and/or motor control. This is the second title to appear in the Wiley SportTexts Series that aims to provide textbooks covering the key disciplines within the academic study of sport.

📝The Swiss Ball Book Synopsis : I have known Beate Carriere for several years and have always been impressed by her deep understanding of the whole field of physiotherapy. In our discussions her questions and comments have been inspiring and demonstrate that her knowledge is not only based on reading but rather on life-long clinical practice and experience. Thus, it is no wonder that her book is excep tional, presenting the physiology, the pathophysiology, and a technical description of recommended exercises and their clinical application - and not as general recommendations but with con vincing examples. All three of the sections are written in clear, understandable language. The author discusses the use of the Swiss ball; however, she did not limit herself to a technical description. Instead she set out to discover the underlying physiological mechanisms and has succeeded in showing how a knowledgable physiotherapist can contribute to the development of physiotherapy as a science. Though based on the concept of S. Klein-Vogelbach, Beate Carriere has added so many of her own exercises, descriptions, and explanations that we are justified in speaking about the Carriere concept of using the Swiss ball. What I appreciate in particular is her critical view and attempt to see the patient and his problems from all possible aspects. Therefore, she does not consider the Swiss ball program the one and only means of treat ment but incorporates other approaches as well.

📝Physique Fitness and Performance Second Edition Book Synopsis : Totally revised and updated, this second edition of the well-received Physique, Fitness, and Performance retains the unique integrated approach of its predecessor, examining the relationship of structure to function in human performance. Far surpassing the limited focus of standard exercise and fitness books, it combines the morphological study of physique relative to body structure, body size and body composition with the applied interaction of muscular, cardiovascular, motor, and metabolic system capacities, abilities, and skills developed and acquired through exercise and training programs. Establishing a background and history for the current prevalent interrelationships between physique and physical performance, the book begins by outlining the morphological, physical, motor, and metabolic component areas of study involved in physical training. Part One introduces the study of the structure-function relationships, relating body structure, size, and composition to fitness and physical performance. Part Two and Part Three present an overview of the quantitative and qualitative study of physical and physiological conditioning, motor learning, and motor control, specifically regarding the development of motor skill within general/open loop and specific/closed loop parameter guidelines. It also covers fatigue and its physiological and psychological effects on training processes. Part Four explores nutrition and the utilization of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, water, vitamins, and minerals during physical training. It includes an overview of lipids, lipoproteins, cholesterol, and atherosclerosis; dietary goals and guidelines; and risk factors relating to heart disease and obesity within health and fitness parameter guidelines. Finally, extensive appendices present the pertinent figures, tables, and forms used in evaluation and programming. Including chapter summaries, glossaries, and references, as well as detailed and extensive appendices for measurement, assessment, and nutrient intake guidelines, Physique, Fitness, and Performance, Second Edition provides a unique extended research base for exercise physiology professionals.

📝Human Performance Book Synopsis : Human Performance provides the student and researcher with a comprehensive and accessible review of performance, in the real world and essential cognitive science theory. Four main sections cover both theoretical and practical issues: Section One outlines the perspectives on performance offered by contemporary cognitive science, including information processing and neuroscience perspectives. Section Two presents a multi-level view of the performer as biological organism, information-processor and intentional agent. It reviews the development of the cognitive theory of performance through experimental studies and also looks at practical issues such as human error. Section Three reviews the impact of stress factors such as noise, fatigue and illness on performance. Section Four assesses individual and group differences in performance with accounts of ability, personality and aging.
