📝Mapping Experience in Polish and Russian Women s Writing Book Synopsis : The volume encompasses eleven articles which discuss the critical views that Polish and Russian women writers have articulated with regard to the notion of experience and constructions of femininity in the national imagination from the 19th to the 21st centuries. Major themes of the articles include women’s experiences as writers in the 19th century; women’s embodied experiences of a traumatic past; body and sexuality in the different ages of women; political and aesthetic discourses and femininity. Although the articles are arranged in chronological order, they do not form an absolute chronological or periodic continuum, i.e. from Romanticism to Postmodernism, although references to certain aesthetic periods are made. The authors of the articles reflect in detail on how the women writers and their literary texts represent different understandings and experiences in relation to dominant perceptions, for example, of the memory of war, of motherhood, of art and aesthetics, and so on. Readers are encouraged to seek parallels and continuities between the different historical times and spaces; between women’s writing in Russia and Poland; between different scholarly approaches and aims. The articles of this volume bring together important critical standpoints in women’s writing in Poland and Russia, in which parallels, continuities, and resemblances can be traced, but in which discontinuities, breaks and differences also make themselves visible. Apart from the conspicuous resemblances between individual Russian and Polish women writers’ works, or even between groups of women writers, the articles document the diversity within Russian and Polish women’s writing, respectively, and even within individual writers.

đź“ťNoise Mapping in the EU Book Synopsis : Noise mapping is the first tool to effectively assess noise exposure, communicating information to citizens, and defining effective action plans for protecting citizens from high noise levels and preserving quiet areas in urban European Community environments. Indeed, strategic noise maps are now required in the European Union for all population centers of more than 250,000 inhabitants, as well as for major roads, railways, and airports, and are becoming required for urban areas with over 100,000 people. Providing a comprehensive reference guide for students, researchers, acoustics consultants, and environmental agencies, Noise Mapping in the EU: Models and Procedures shows how to integrate data with geographical information systems, improve accuracy in model and prediction software, and assess different methods and descriptors for evaluating annoyance and noise exposure. It offers guidance on regulations, communication processes, physical aspects, and application of noise mapping, as well as on communication processes for citizens involved in decision making. Beginning with fundamental concepts in acoustics and a presentation of legal frameworks for noise mapping in Europe, the book covers all the main issues about noise mapping. It presents numerical models for roads, railways, airports, harbours, and industrial sites. The chapters are written by European experts from a range of research institutes, companies, and environmental agencies. Using a practical approach and worked examples, the text discusses control and uncertainty in input data and output results, technical recommendations from working groups, and the Good Practice Guide (GPG) tool. It provides in-depth coverage of geographic information system (GIS) techniques for noise management and the evaluation and management of noise exposure, and concludes by reviewing noise mapping experiences in Europe, communication to the public, and future perspectives for mapping the effects of noise.

đź“ťGlobal Mapping of Human Settlement Book Synopsis : The use of remote sensors for human settlement mapping and monitoring holds great promise for numerous fields of study, including urban planning and global environmental change and sustainability. While the potential for this technology is difficult to measure, achieving useful results at a regional or global level is but a recent accomplishment. Global Mapping of Human Settlement is the first book to provide a comprehensive overview of the methodologies, datasets, and approaches related to the use of remotely sensed data to map human settlements at the global scale, as well as the experiences encountered with their application. Valuable to a broad range of researchers, the book begins by analyzing the requirements for global and regional urban remote sensing. It provides a general background of global urban issues, outlines observation and assessment requirements, and looks at how these relate to current initiatives on international policy and strategic levels. The contributors, an international group of pioneering experts, describe the characteristics of human settlements as seen and mapped from remote sensors, either at the regional or global scale. They also discuss the spectral variety, special scales, and nighttime appearance as key remote sensing indicators of these environments. The text explores some of the most acclaimed and important projects and programs previously carried out or in current use for urban mapping and monitoring. These chapters highlight the impressive amount of information available and the processing and analysis techniques used to extract such data from several data sources, including satellite imagery. The book also explores some of the future challenges and makes recommendations regarding areas of research that should be actively pursued. DVD Included to Complement the Text To provide readers with the opportunity to experience the latest tools, the editors supplement the text with a DVD that provides samples of the latest products. These will assist readers in testing approaches proposed in the book.

📝Learning to Learn from Experience Book Synopsis : Our success in life and living depends largely on our ability to learn from experience. Direct contact with things and persons affects every facet of our lives—behavior, perception, autonomy and creativity. This overview of experiential learning explores the process of learning from experience, showing how it affects one’s personality and offers means to cope with feelings of powerlessness and insignificance. The book describes the conditions under which experiential learning results in personal growth and those in which growth is inhibited. It shows how we test the validity of our interpretations and how we resist such tests. Learning to Learn from Experience examines the learning process in various types of social relationships. It shows how learning in large groups differs from that in intimate circles. Finally it illustrates the interrelationships between experiential and academic learning. This book also provides a wealth of practical strategies and tools enabling the reader to prepare for useful experiential learning.
