📝A Perpetual Fire Book Synopsis : After serving as a missionary and then foreign advisor to Qing officials from 1887 to 1911, John Ferguson became a leading dealer of Chinese art, providing the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and other museums with their inaugural collections of paintings and bronzes. In multiple publications dating to the 1920s and 1930s, Ferguson made the controversial claim that China’s autochthonous culture was the basis of Chinese art. His two Chinese language reference works, still in use today, were produced with essential help from Chinese scholars. Emulating these “men of culture” with whom he lived and worked in Peking, Ferguson gathered paintings, bronzes, rubbings, and other artifacts. In 1934, he donated this group of over one thousand objects to Nanjing University, the school he had helped to found as a young missionary. This work offers a significant contribution to the history of Chinese art collection. John Ferguson learned from and worked with Qing dynasty collectors and scholars, and then Republican-era dealers and archeologists, while simultaneously supplying the objects he had come to know as Chinese art to American museums and individuals. He is an ideal subject to help us see the interconnections between increased Western interest in Chinese art and archeology in the modern era, and cultural change taking place in China.

📝Framing Famous Mountains Book Synopsis : "Treating landscape painting as yet another framing systems, in both the symbolic and material sense, this book examines sixteenth-century paintings of famous mountains by three major artists in the light of a diachronic account of the evolution of famous mountains over time and a synchronic account of the vogue for the grand tour in late Ming society." --Book Jacket.

📝Gems Computers and Attractors for 3 Manifolds Book Synopsis : This book is about dealing with 3-manifolds using computers. Its emphasis is on presenting algorithms which are used for solving (in practice) the homeomorphism problem for the smallest of these objects. The key concept is the 3-gem, a special kind of edge-colored graph, which encodes the manifold via a ball complex. Passages between 3-gems and more standard presentations like Heegaard diagrams and surgery descriptions are provided. A catalogue of all closed orientable 3-manifolds induced by 3-gems up to 30 vertices is included. In order to help the classification, various invariants are presented, including the new quantum invariants. Contents:IntroductionGraph-Encoded ManifoldsElements of the Theory of 3-GemsDecomposition Theory: HandlesSimplifying Dynamics: The TSup-AlgorithmThe Generation and Classification of 3-ManifoldsGetting Linking Numbers of 3-ManifoldsComputing the Quantum Invariants from BlinksAppendices Readership: Mathematicians. keywords:Combinatorial Methods in Topology;Gems: Graph-Encoded Manifolds;Combinatorial Classification of Surfaces;Catalogue of 3-Manifolds;Homeomorphism Problem;Computation of Linking Numbers;Framed Links;Blinks;Strings for 3-Manifolds;Computation of Quantum Invariants

📝Diamond Mountains Book Synopsis : Mount Geumgang, also known as the Diamond Mountains, is perhaps the most famous and emotionally resonant site on the Korean Peninsula, a magnificent range of rocky peaks, waterfalls, and lagoons, dotted with pavilions and temples. Since ancient times, it has inspired cultural pride, spurred spiritual and artistic pilgrimages, and engendered an outpouring of creative expression. Yet since the partition of Korea in 1945 situated it in the North, Mount Geumgang has remained largely inaccessible to visitors, shrouded in legend, loss, and longing. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana} Diamond Mountains: Travel and Nostalgia in Korean Art is the first book in English to explore the pictorial representations of this grand and varied landscape. The special exhibition it accompanies, organized by Soyoung Lee, Curator in the Department of Asian Art, examines the evolution of Diamond Mountains imagery from the golden age of Korean true-view painting in the eighteenth century to the present day. Even today, when a profusion of Instagram photos can make the world’s most obscure sites and geographical oddities seem familiar, the Diamond Mountains portrayed here in album leaves, scrolls, and screens will be a revelation to many.
