📒Saline Lakes ✍ John M. Melack
📝Saline Lakes Book Synopsis : Limnological research on saline lakes is practiced by a growing cadre of scientists active worldwide in a diversity of disciplines. Every three years since 1979, an international symposium on inland saline waters has served to strengthen and expand the scope of the studies. Promising areas for further research especially well suited to saline lakes include the comparative physiology of adaptation to osmotic stresses, the role of microbial and protozoan communities in nutrient dynamics and biotic interactions in ecosystems with few species. The Third International Symposium on Inland Saline Lakes was held at the University of Nairobi, Nairobi, Kenya, under the auspices of the Societas Internationalis Limnologiae (SIL). The symposium was sponsored by and received financial or other support from the U.S. National Science Foundation (International Program), United Nations Environment Program, University of California, Santa Barbara, and University of Nairobi. The proceedings occurred for three days (28-31 August, 1985) and were attended by 33 scientists from 14 countries (see list of Participants). On the day prior to the first formal session an afternoon trip to Lake Magadi and salt works was held. The tribulations of this excursion served to acquaint the participants with each other and with the realities of exploring the African bush. A three day post-congress expedition to the rift valley included visits to spectacular saline lakes such as Nakuru and Bogoria. Much of the meeting's and excursion's success is owed to the efforts of the local organizer, Dr. Stephen G.

📒Designs 2002 ✍ W.D. Wallis
📝Designs 2002 Book Synopsis : This volume is a sequel to our 1996 compilation, Computational and Constructive Design Theory. Again we concentrate on two closely re lated aspects of the study of combinatorial designs: design construction and computer-aided study of designs. There are at least three classes of constructive problems in design theory. The first type of problem is the construction of a specific design. This might arise because that one particular case is an exception to a general rule, the last remaining case of a problem, or the smallest unknown case. A good example is the proof that there is no projective plane of parameter 10. In that case the computations involved were not different in kind from those which have been done by human brains without electronic assistance; they were merely longer. Computers have also been useful in the study of combinatorial spec trum problems: if a class of design has certain parameters, what is the set of values that the parameters can realize? In many cases, there is a recursive construction, so that the existence of a small number of "starter" designs leads to the construction of infinite classes of designs, and computers have proven very useful in finding "starter" designs.
📒Tetraeuangelium Sanctum ✍ Philip Edward Pusey
📝Tetraeuangelium Sanctum Book Synopsis : Tetraeuangelium Sanctum (The Four Holy Gospels) is the definitive critical edition of the Syriac Gospels in the Peshitta. Pusey and Gwilliam based the edition on the readings of forty-one manuscripts from the fifth century onwards. Aside from the Syriac text, the editors included a Latin translation and a large critical apparatus. Out of print for years, this is an indispensable research tool for students of Syriac.

📒Handbook Of Seafood Quality Safety And Health Applications ✍ Cesarettin Alasalvar
📝Handbook of Seafood Quality Safety and Health Applications Book Synopsis : The global market for seafood products continues to increase year by year. Food safety considerations are as crucial as ever in this sector, and higher standards of quality are demanded even as products are shipped greater distances around the world. The current global focus on the connection between diet and health drives growth in the industry and offers commercial opportunities on a number of fronts. There is great interest in the beneficial effects of marine functional compounds such as omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Seafoods are well-known as low calorie foods, and research continues into the nutritional effects on, for example, obesity and heart disease. In addition, by-products of marine food processing can be used in nutraceutical applications. This book is a resource for those interested in the latest advances in the science and technology of seafood quality and safety as well as new developments in the nutritional effects and applications of marine foods. It includes chapters on the practical evaluation of seafood quality; novel approaches in preservation techniques; flavour chemistry and analysis; textural quality and measurement; packaging; the control of food-borne pathogens and seafood toxins. New research on the health-related aspects of marine food intake are covered, as well as the use of seafoods as sources of bioactives and nutraceuticals. The book is directed at scientists and technologists in academia, government laboratories and the seafood industries, including quality managers, processors and sensory scientists.
📒Nearshore Sediment Transport ✍ R.J. Seymour
📝Nearshore Sediment Transport Book Synopsis : This book represents the efforts of over a hundred individuals who planned and executed the NSTS field experiments, analyzed the billions of data points, and distilled their findings and insights into the summaries found here. Because these experiments were of a scope that will seldom, if ever, be duplicated, and because the program brought together many of the foremost field experimentalists in this country, we all felt from the beginning that it was important to preserve the outcome. This was done in two ways. First, the raw data were made available to any interested investigator within 18 months of the completion of each experiment. Secondly, both the methodology of the experiments and the findings from them were codified in the form of a monograph. This book is that result. I have had the occasion recently (Sediments '87 Proceedings, Vol. 1, pp. 642-651) to assess the NSTS performance. I found that we made giant strides in our understanding of the surf zone hydrodynamics --far more than our fondest expectations at the beginning. We were able to do less than we had hoped about the response of the sediment, largely because of a limited ability to measure it at a point. As I reported in the Sediments '87 assessment, we established a new state of the art in measurement techniques and we demonstrated the effectiveness of large, multi-investigator, instrument-intensive experiments for studying nearshore processes.

📒Homogeneous Catalysis With Metal Phosphine Complexes ✍ Louis M. Pignolet
📝Homogeneous Catalysis with Metal Phosphine Complexes Book Synopsis : The field of transition metal catalysis has experienced incredible growth during the past decade. The reasons for this are obvious when one considers the world's energy problems and the need for new and less energy demanding syntheses of important chemicals. Heterogeneous catalysis has played a major industrial role; however, such reactions are generally not selective and are exceedingly difficult to study. Homogeneous catalysis suffers from on-site engineering difficulties; however, such reactions usually provide the desired selectivity. For example, Monsanto's synthesis of optically-active amino acids employs a chiral homogeneous rhodium diphosphine catalyst. Industrial uses of homogeneous catalyst systems are increasing. It is not by accident that many homogeneous catalysts contain tertiary phosphine ligands. These ligands possess the correct steric and electronic properties that are necessary for catalytic reactivity and selectivity. This point will be emphasized throughout the book. Thus the stage is set for a comprehensive be treatment of the many ways in which phosphine catalyst systems can designed, synthesized, and studied.

📝Geschichte Der Quellen Und Der Literatur Des Canonischen Rechts Im Abendlande Bis Zum Ausgange Des Mittelalters Book Synopsis : Reprint of the only edition. Volume I (all published): Die Rechtssammlungen bis zur Mitte des 9. Jahrhunderts. Maassen [1823-1900], a Roman Catholic jurist and distinguished legal scholar, held professorships of Roman and canon law at the Universities of Pesch, Innsbruck, Graz and Vienna. His research centered on the early papacy and the history of canon law. Inspired by Savigny's great Geschichte des Romischen Rechts im Mittelalter (1815-1831), Maasen's study has a similar organization. He intended to produce a work in five volumes, but only succeeded in publishing the first, which covers the period spanning the end of the Roman Empire to the later decades of the ninth century. Outdated in certain points today, as one would expect, it remains a standard title in bibliographies devoted to post-medieval legal history and canon law.
📒Distant Tyranny ✍ Regina Grafe
📝Distant Tyranny Book Synopsis : Spain's development from a premodern society into a modern unified nation-state with an integrated economy was painfully slow and varied widely by region. Economic historians have long argued that high internal transportation costs limited domestic market integration, while at the same time the Castilian capital city of Madrid drew resources from surrounding Spanish regions as it pursued its quest for centralization. According to this view, powerful Madrid thwarted trade over large geographic distances by destroying an integrated network of manufacturing towns in the Spanish interior. Challenging this long-held view, Regina Grafe argues that decentralization, not a strong and powerful Madrid, is to blame for Spain's slow march to modernity. Through a groundbreaking analysis of the market for bacalao--dried and salted codfish that was a transatlantic commodity and staple food during this period--Grafe shows how peripheral historic territories and powerful interior towns obstructed Spain's economic development through jurisdictional obstacles to trade, which exacerbated already high transport costs. She reveals how the early phases of globalization made these regions much more externally focused, and how coastal elites that were engaged in trade outside Spain sought to sustain their positions of power in relation to Madrid. Distant Tyranny offers a needed reassessment of the haphazard and regionally diverse process of state formation and market integration in early modern Spain, showing how local and regional agency paradoxically led to legitimate governance but economic backwardness.
