📝Building Colonialism Book Synopsis : Building Colonialism draws together the relationship between archaeology and history in East Africa using techniques of artefact, building, spatial and historical analyses to highlight the existence of, and accordingly the need to conserve, the urban centres of Africa's more recent past. The study does this by exploring the physical remains of European activity and the way that the construction of harbour towns directly reflects the colonial mission of European powers in the nineteenth century in Tanzania and Kenya. Based on fieldwork which recorded and analysed the buildings and monuments within these towns it compares the European creations to earlier Swahili urban design and explores the way European commercial trade systems came to dominate East Africa. Based on the kind of Urban Landscape Analyses carried out in the UK and Ireland, Building Colonialism looks at the social and spatial implications of the towns on the Indian Ocean coast which contain centres of derelict and unused buildings dating from East Africa's nineteenth-century colonial era. The book begins by concentrating upon towns in Tanzania and Kenya which were the key entry points into Africa for the nineteenth-century colonial regimes and compares these to later French and Italian colonies and discusses contemporary approaches to the conservation of colonial built heritage and the difficulties faced in ensuring valid participatory protection of the urban heritage resource.

📝Civil Society and Democratic Theory Book Synopsis : This book introduces radically alternative models of civil society that have been developed outside the liberal democratic frame of reference, models which suggest that civil society does offer new and non-statist democratic possibilities. Drawing on a wide range of civil society theory-practice from Eastern Europe and Latin America (including the Zapatistas in Mexico), and from visions of global civil society too, this book is uniquely positioned to consider the questions posed by these alternative voices for democratic theory and practice. * Are there alternatives to the liberal democratic vision of civil society? * Is a democracy located in civil society rather than the state either possible or desirable? * How and why has the concept of civil society come to be used so widely today? * Can global civil society further the struggle for democracy initiated by national civil societies?

📝Exiles Book Synopsis : Exiles: Living Missionally in a Post-Christian Culture presents a biblical, Christian worldview for the emergent church--people who are not at home in the traditional church or in the secular world. As exiles of both, they must create their own worldview that integrates their Christian beliefs with the contemporary world. Exiles seeks to integrate all aspects of life and decision-making and to develop the characteristics of a Christian life lived intentionally within emerging (postmodern) culture. It presents a plea for a dynamic, life-affirming, robust Christian faith that can be lived successfully in the post-Christian world of twenty-first century Western society. This book will present a Christian lifestyle that can be lived in non-religious categories and be attractive to not-yet Christians. Such a worldview takes ecology and politics seriously. It offers a positive response to the workplace, the arts, feminism, mystery and worship. Exiles seeks to develop a framework that will allow Christians to live boldly and courageously in a world that no longer values the culture of the church, but does greatly value many of the things the Bible speaks positively about. This book suggests that there us more to being a Christian than meets the eye. It explores the secret, unseen nooks and crannies in the life of a Christian and suggests that faith is about more than church attendance and belief in God. Written in a conversational, easy-to-read style, Exiles is aimed at church leaders, pastors and laypersons and seeks to address complex issues in a simple manner. It includes helpful photographs and diagrams.

📝Participant observer Book Synopsis : What would happen if a social scientist saw himself not as an outsider but as a participant, engaging in the situations he studied and acting to change the course of events? The distinguished career of William Foote Whyte as an activist scholar provides a rich and complex answer to that question. Participant Observer is Whyte's own story. He takes us to worksites from Boston's North End in the early forties to Spain and Peru in the seventies to Jamestown, New York, in the eighties. Along the way, we see the development of his thinking and the spread of his influence into fields as disparate as social psychology, industrial relations, and agricultural development. While it documents a remarkable career, Participant Observer is also a personal chronicle. Whyte reflects with candor and sometimes great amusement on the years of his childhood, his academic education, and his marriage. He also describes being stricken with polio and recounts how he and his family worked to circumvent the handicaps the disease dealt him. Beginning with his study of neighborhood gangs in Boston's North End and moving into such diverse workplaces as the oil fields of Oklahoma, the dining rooms of Stouffer's, and rural villages in Peru, Whyte's research has focused on connections between social organization and human performance. Whyte listened to what workers told him, gave their views weight in his recommendations to decision makers, and eventually became a powerful voice for greater worker participation and workplace democracy. His work is a model for the social sciences and his story should be read by any serious student of them.
