📝A House in the Country Book Synopsis : Nestled amid the lush, gently rolling hills of cattle and horse farms in Millbrook, New York, is a handsome Greek Revival house that looks like it s always been there. In fact, it is brand new the collaborative effort of architect Peter Pennoyer and his wife, interior designer Katie Ridder. This irresistible book, exquisitely illustrated with photographs, finely rendered plans, and hand-painted illustrations, tells the home s story. The design followed Pennoyer s conviction that historical examples are a springboard for the imagination and offer compelling solutions for new architecture. So, though many characteristics of the house are classical, and, more specifically, Greek Revival, it is also thoroughly contemporary and environmentally friendly, with an exuberantly colorful interior and spectacular gardens."

📝A Very Big House in the Country Book Synopsis : 'Holidays are about surviving the gaps between one meal and another.' For one long hot summer in Devon, three families are sharing one very big house in the country. The Herreras: made up of two tired parents, three grumbling children and one promiscuous dog; the Littles: he's loaded (despite two divorces and five kids), she's gorgeous, but maybe the equation for a truly happy marriage is a bit more complicated than that; and the Browns, who seem oddly jumpy around people, but especially each other. By the pool, new friendships blossom; at the Aga door, resentments begin to simmer. Secret crushes are formed and secret cigarettes cadged by the teens, as the adults loosen their inhibitions with litres of white wine and start to get perhaps a little too honest ... Mother hen to all, Evie Herreras has a life-changing announcement to make, one that could rock the foundations of her family. But will someone else beat her to it?

📝The Country Houses of John F Staub Book Synopsis : "This ambitious study of Staub's work by architectural historian Stephen Fox goes beyond a description of Staub's houses. Fox analyzes the roles of space, structure, and decoration in creating, defining, and maintaining social class structures and expectations and shows how Staub was able to incorporate these elements and understandings into the elegant buildings he designed for his clients. In the process, he contributes greatly to a fuller understanding of Houston's emergence as a premier American city."--BOOK JACKET.

📝Echoes of a Haunting Book Synopsis : In the first place, the house doesnt even look haunted. With these words, a different world opens up to readers as it did some twenty nine years ago for an unsuspecting family from Buffalo, New York. Echoes of a Haunting traces the steps of this normal family whose life turned upside down when they moved to a disturbed or haunted house in Southern New York State in 1970. It is told in diary form in order to bring a semblance of order to the events. At first, the family tended to discount the happenings and come up with some rather creative explanations. Soon, however, the explanations began more and more to assume the form of rationalizations. Before long, they were forced to admit that there was no natural cause for what was occurring daily both in the house and in the surrounding area. Reluctantly, the members of the family began to reach out to others. In some cases, they encountered scorn and even a strange, unwarranted, hostility as though the whole panoply of phenomena were their fault. It was a very bad atmosphere in which to raise a family. Once the story became public, help was offered by psychics and clergy. In some cases this help even brought a temporary relief but the trouble never disappeared for long. Strange accidents, one almost fatal, happened on a regular basis. Figures were seen, both human and otherwise. In one case a house was seen where no house had existed for many, many years. Disturbing personality changes emerged, even resulting in a transformation of eye color from brown to blue. The toll taken on the emotional and physical health of the family soon became too much to endure and they were forced to abandon the house in 1974. Hopefully, this book will cause skeptics to think again to avoid a similar shock to the senses. The family had a rude awakening. Its never easy finding out that you cant always trust your senses, that nothing is really impossible and that there is a breaking point for everyone. Whether the reader is a died-in-the-wool skeptic, a searcher, a believer or somewhere in between, I hope everyone reads these pages with an open mind. It is all true! Echoes of a Haunting has recently been chosen as a textbook for a Masters´ Degree Program in Parapsychology at Texas Christian University. The Professor teaching the course, Dr. Timothy Barth, has stated that it´s the best documented case of a haunting he has ever read. The house is currently being investigated by Paranormal researchers who have taken startling photos of "energy orbs" and strange colored lights in the area. Hopefully, these photos will be available soon on the Author´s website.

📝Life in the Country House in Georgian Ireland Book Synopsis : "For aristocrats and gentry in 18th-century Ireland, the townhouses and country estates they resided in were carefully constructed to accommodate their cultivated lifestyles. Based on new research from Irish national collections and correspondence culled from papers in private keeping, this publication provides a vivid and engaging look at the various ways in which families tailored their homes to their personal needs and preferences. Halls were designed in order to simultaneously support a variety of activities, including dining, music, and games, while closed porches allowed visitors to arrive fully protected from the country's harsh weather. These grand houses were arranged in accordance with their residents' daily procedures, demonstrating a distinction between public and private spaces, and even keeping in mind the roles and arrangements of the servants in their purposeful layouts. With careful consideration given to both the practicality of everyday routine and the occasional special event, this book illustrates how the lives and residential structures of these aristocrats were inextricably woven together. 📝Design and Plan in the Country House Book Synopsis : The way a man thinks about his day-to-day living and the needs of his household reveals a great deal about his ambitions, his idea of himself, and his role in the community. And his house or castle offers many clues to his habits as well as those of the members of his household. This intriguing book explores the evolution of country house plans throughout Britain and Ireland, from medieval times to the eighteenth century. With photographs and detailed architectural plans of each of the 180 houses under discussion, the book presents a whole range of new insights into how these homes were designed and what their varied plans tell us about the lives of their residents. Starting with fortified medieval tower houses, the book traces patterns that developed and sometimes repeated in country house design over the centuries. It discusses who slept in the bedchambers, where food was prepared, how rooms were arranged for official and private activities, what towers signified, and more. Groundbreaking in its depth, the volume offers a rare tour of country houses for scholar and general reader alike.

📝The English Country House Book Synopsis : "Ranging from Kentchurch Court, a former fortified medieval manor house that has been the seat of the Scudamore family for nearly 1,000 years to a delightful Strawberry Hill-style Gothic house in rural Cornwall to a ducal palace (Badminton) to stately Goodwood House, England's greatest sporting estate, this beautifully illustrated book showcases ten outstanding British country houses--all still in the hands of descendants of the original owners. James Peill, co-author of Vendome's The Irish Country House and curator of Goodwood House, recounts the ups and downs of such deep-rooted clans as the Cracrofts, landowners in Lincolnshire since the twelfth century, whose late-eighteenth-century Hackthorn Hall is a perfect example of the kind of house Jane Austen describes in her novels (indeed, she appears on their family tree), as well as the relatively newly arrived Biddulphs, who constructed Rodmarton, an Arts & Crafts masterpiece, in the first decades of the last century. James Fennell, the photographer of this volume and its Scottish and Irish companions, has once again provided a wealth of gardens, charming interiors, bygone sporting trophies, fine art collections, and fanciful family memorabilia, making The English Country House a delicious treat for Anglophiles and lovers of old houses.
